Asphalt Three-Tab Roofing Shingles

Asphalt Three Tab ShinglesAsphalt roofing shingles are measured against a variety of standards that evaluate fire and wind resistance, tear strength, and other key roof performance indicators. Asphalt roofing shingles come in two basic types: glass fiber (a.k.a. fiber glass) and organic. Organic roofing shingles consist of an organic felt material, which is generally paper, saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof. A top coating of adhesive asphalt is then applied and the ceramic granules are then embedded. Organic shingles contain around 40% more asphalt per square (100 sq. ft.) than their glass fiber counterpart which makes the shingle weigh more and gives them excellent durability and blow-off resistance.

Architectural Laminate Roofing Shingles

Architectural Laminate Roofing ShinglesArchitectural laminate roofing shingles have a solid shingle on the bottom (no notches like in the 3-tab roofing shingle) and additional layer laminated on top of the lower half of the roofing shingle, to give it a dimensional architectural look of wood shake shingles. Generally, architectural roofing shingles will last a bit longer than 3-tabs, but they should not be installed on a roof slope less then 4. For roof slopes of 3-4, it’s best to use a 3-tab roofing shingles, as it will have better protection from wind driven rain.

Architectural laminate roof shingles are a popular choice of roofing shingle with homeowners and roofers. Architectural laminate roof shingles create depth and the appearance that is similar to wood shake shingles. The roofing shingles contain more than one layer of tabs which make them extra thick. Compared to the older style 3-tab residential roofs shingles, architectural laminate roof shingles are more energy-efficient, provide better wear, fire protection and shield against blow-offs from the wind.

Wood Shake Roofing Shingles

Wood shakes shingles provide your roof a look and even a rich aroma to the roof of your home. These types of roofing shingles are generally made from cedar and occasionally redwood or southern pine. More expensive than asphalt roofing shingles, but less expensive than slate, wood shingles provide a look that many homeowners find irresistible. Their rich, warm color and texture blend beautifully in any natural environment. The natural effects of aging and weathering give wood shake shingles, in time, an attractive silvery grey colored roof.

Slate Tiling

Slate Roofing ShinglesSlate roofing is available in various grades and colors. It is the perfect roof topping to an elegant home providing amazing textures and style. Slate is very high-quality and very low maintenance, with a life expectancy of between 40 and 200 years.
